Signs of a Holistic Learning Environment in a School

The education today is not about fancy books and lengthy notebooks colored blue, green and red by the trio of students, teachers, and principals.

Education has finally become learning. It is not memorizing and drawing what and how good one can remember.

But how well a mind can make the best out of the information that is delivered to them.

Parents want all round development of students now. Holistic or all round development can be understood as emotional, social, physical, creative, and intellectual growth of an individual.

At BIPS we know it is important for a child to grow as a whole human being rather than just being a better student.

First Thing First

Academic excellence still will top the list every single time whenever the discussion of a well-developed society would emerge.

Holistic development as contrary to the common belief is developing other areas of a child while educating the child from the latest possible curriculum possible.

Bhupindra International Public School has developed a hybrid curriculum with the help of Montessori learning at our preschool and well-known CBSE education system at our senior school

Results in our five year old students speaking four languages, Punjabi, French, English, and Hindi plus our class 8th students fusing history and science together to study historical water conservation methods used in ancient Punjab giving BIPS unique water conservation methods.

Even our revolutionary homework policy clearly underlines that there is balanced growth in students.

All the assignments are designed to reinforce learning at the campus rather than home.

As noted by our class 6th Student Arjun’s mother, “My child’s homework makes sense at BIPS, we migrated to the school a few years back.

Both of us used to sit at least three hours for homework given by his previous school. We both have more time to bond, develop, and learn new things as the burden has been lifted completely.”

No to Rote Learning

Every human brain works differently. Every child has their strengths, weaknesses, needs, and requirements learning cannot be a one fit all scheme.

Our teachers’ core expertise is to examine, assess, and underline what a child requires to develop wholly?

We run SWOT analysis each month on our students and share reports with the parents to highlight their:

  • Strength.

  • Weaknesses.

  • Opportunities.

  • Threats.

This way we ensure that no single child is left behind. A proud mother of our grade 5th student Gurman, Mrs. Kapoor says, “Maths was a big challenge for my child in his last school, but BIPS has specifically sharpened her mathematics basics to ensure that the root cause is corrected. Maths is Gurman’s favorite subject now.”

Our student development & testing methods are not solely dependent on weekly or monthly tests,  presentations, project reports, writing competitions, and peer assessments used along with monthly SWOT analysis are the base of a holistic BIPS Education.

Emotional Intelligence

EI or Emotional Intelligence is the core of BIPS mentality. We do not see it as an add on or extra something, but as the inseparable part of a child’s development.

Teachers learn anti-punishment discipline practices that allow students to get the outcome of their choices without merely enforcing rules or outer pressure.

Daily circle time in classrooms provides secure environments for students to share concerns, resolve difficulties together, and establish community.

Critical & Creative Thinking

Take a stroll through our campus and you will see creativity in full bloom. Our Innovation Lab, Art Studio, and Performing Arts Center offer specialist facilities where students can explore and realize their creativity.

The BIPS Innovation Challenge, held annually, is perhaps the finest demonstration of how we encourage critical thinking. Middle school students last year found problems confronting senior citizens in neighboring communities and collaborated to solve them. Their solutions varied from easy-to-use technology interfaces to community gardens for intergenerational involvement all with the oversight of faculty mentors.

"When my Grade 7 son suggested an apparently impossible solution to plastic pollution, I thought teachers would guide him gently back," says Dr. Gupta. "Instead, they posed challenging questions to get him to think it through a little harder and teamed him up with local environmental experts. The end result taught him more about scientific principles, research techniques, and perseverance than any textbook could."

A Networked Society

At BIPS, we work hard to bridge age, disciplines, and school walls. Our "Learning Partners" program pairs older and younger students for weekly activities, building mentorship skills and a positive school culture.

Community engagement is woven into our curriculum. Grade 10 students spent a short while recently working with artisans learning Phulkari embroidery techniques, documenting these cultural traditions while creating a sellable product line that generates income for artisan families.

Parents are essential members of our learning community. Beyond parent-teacher groups, our Parent Knowledge Network taps family expertise, bringing parents into classrooms as guest speakers, mentors, and workshop leaders. As one parent described, "BIPS doesn't just say they value parent involvement, they create meaningful ways for us to contribute to the learning community."

Environments That Spark Learning

The physical environment in BIPS is well-planned with a view to develop overall growth. Classrooms receive plenty of sunlight, outdoor spaces can be used to conduct different kinds of activities, and adjustable furniture settings provide learners with a chance to learn the way they best prefer.

Our campus features student-tended botanical gardens, peaceful contemplation areas, and active play zones. Movement isn't limited to physical education class time, teachers incorporate movement breaks into the school day as well, and our "Learning in Motion" philosophy enables students to incorporate physical movement into academic learning.

"The difference in my daughter's involvement is dramatic," says Mrs. Patel. "She struggled to sit still for more than a few minutes at her previous school. At BIPS, her desire to move is respected and channeled constructively. She comes home energized rather than exhausted."

Values That Shape Daily Life

Instead of merely putting values on the wall, BIPS incorporates basic values—respect, integrity, compassion, and excellence into day-to-day interactions and decision-making. Students are involved in developing classroom agreements, taking ownership of shared values.

Where there is trouble, our restorative practices model teaches students about the effect of their behavior, about apologizing once they've made a mistake, and about fixing relationships instead of breaking them. As one Grade 6 student put it, "At my old school, getting into trouble meant punishment. Here, it's about fixing what went wrong and learning from it."

Student Voice and Choice

Students here at BIPS are also active learners in charge of their education. Students starting from the very first grades genuinely make real choices regarding what and how they learn and demonstrate it. Our grade-level representatives at Student Council offer students real school policy voice and leadership opportunities.

The "My Voice Matters" program inspires students to put forth proposals for changing school environments and systems. When middle school students determined there was a need for quiet reading areas during lunch, they researched possibilities, presented proposals, and worked with staff to put their solution into practice.

"My son was very shy at his old school," says Mr. Singh. "Since coming to BIPS, he's become more confident through having his ideas respected. When he proposed changes to the science fair structure, teachers listened and implemented his ideas."

Joy in Learning

Maybe the best evidence of BIPS' holistic approach is the enthusiasm students have for learning. Visitors always remark about the positive atmosphere across our campus. Our attendance rates average 97%, well above local averages, as evidence of students' desire to be involved in school life.

Smriti, recently graduated Grade 12 now attending a prestigious university, reflects back: "What I enjoyed most about BIPS wasn't the academic training, although that was wonderful. It was learning how to meet obstacles with curiosity rather than with fear, to communicate effectively with all kinds of team members, and to approach learning as a life-long endeavor rather than as a competition."

Getting Ready for a Complicated Future

In an era of accelerated change and increasing complexity, success demands more than academic knowledge. BIPS graduates go into post-secondary education and the workforce with critical strengths: self-knowledge, flexibility, creative problem-solving, and the ability for rich relationships.
